It depends on what you are going to be using it for, the kind of software or app involves is matters a lot when deciding.
Chromebook
A Chromebook is ok if it is just for regular use like for normal web searches surfing, taking online classes, webinars, taking notes, watching Netflix, YouTube videos all these are what I use my Chromebook and remember that a Chromebook will only use chrome, so, no more no less.
Noemal Laptop
However, you are going to need a normal laptop if your subjects involve heavy content creation, designing which involves heavy graphic use, and also if what you are taking involves 3d graphics, gaming, or editing.
Chromebook Vs. Laptop
One thing about a chrome book is that it’s not really for installing heavy applications or software, though you can add things to chrome from the chrome app store other than nothing like Microsoft Office or any heavy software of that type.
What can you do with Chromebook?
Because a Chromebook will only use chrome. So anything that you can do with chrome and chrome alone, you can do with a Chromebook website, you can surf the internet, wash videos, google docs, sheets, presentations, and the rest of them, but not for heavy users.

Pros
- There are no driver conflicts.
- No update needed
- No backup or restore needed
- It’s cheaper than the normal laptop
- Compact and easy to carry, not heavy
Cons
What you can’t do with a Chromebook include:
- You cannot play games, even most flash games.
- You can upgrade or install a better operating system.
- You can only do things that you can do with the Google Chrome browser.

Is Chromebook Better Choice For College Students: Final thought
It all depends on what you are going to be using it for, though Chromebooks are most widely used in a school that provided laptops for students, why?
Because they are cheaper compact and very controllable but so to speak, they are not the best for a student to get because truly they are cheap and are not really compatible with almost all applications unless you are not going to use for heavy work.
If you are going to be using it just to take, notes, surf the internet, wash videos, google docs, sheets, presentations watching Netflix, or YouTube videos like I do then you can go for it.
