Both work the same thing but though the difference between the two of them is the output capacity,  now let’s find out exactly what I mean when we say there is no huge significant difference between them.

What’s the difference between a Regular Adapter and a laptop AC  adapter?

A regular adapter  ( charger)  and that of your laptop ac adapter work in a very similar way,  they are both responsible for the power supply.

They both take 120V or 240V AC and transform it into a lower DC voltage,  they are both responsible for recharging the battery on your device and powering it on.

The  important  components  inside the box  may  include:

  • Transformer
  • Rectifier
  • Capacitor
  • The voltage regulator in some cases

What is the difference between a Regular adapter  Vs laptop  AC  Adapter?

The important difference between the two of them is determined by the power output capability.

For instance, a  laptop will normally operate at an output capacity rate of about  15    to   20  and  2 to  5  amp depending on the model of the laptop.

While the other regular adapter has a  smaller amount of output capacity they are usually 5 to 12 volts and 1 to 3 amps or even less.

So,   both the normal regular device adapter and the laptop ac adapter perform the same basic function normally,  and even though you may have come across some adapters with much heavier and bulkier size than a  normal switching adapter,  for instance, an older transformer-based power supply in the early days.

They all do the same thing, but it’s just a large transformer included inside with the purpose to regulate and step the voltage down to the normal amount needed by the gadget to power on and work properly and prevent burnout.

Nowadays a  smaller transformer is used to step down high-frequency AC, saving weight, cost, and size.

In some power adapters, the (transformer)  inside the box is what do the transformation,  while in others, a bridge (rectifier)  converts the AC to DC, a (capacitor)  is responsible for the output power, and a (voltage regulator)  may be used so the voltage output stays constant no matter how much load is applied.

Should I buy a Higher voltage AC adapter for my laptop

One thing you want to always take into consideration when going for a laptop ac adapter is that the Wattage is Volts x Amps, but there is so much more to it, here is what you should know.

See,   an excessive voltage can damage your laptop, but excessive Amperage won’t do any harm.

One thing is that though,  the device will only draw as many amps as it needs and that is totally fine.

So,   before you buy an AC adapter for your laptop make sure that the volt is exactly the same compatibility with your laptop brand.

Doesn’t matter if the amperage doesn’t match,  or you can even go for the higher amperage.

The most important thing is that as long as the volts are correct, you won’t damage your laptop or malfunction.

How do I know I have the correct AC Adapter Volt for my laptop?

To determine you have a   correct ac adapter volt compatible with your laptop brand normally you should find the volt compatibility of your laptop within general electric specification at the bottom of your laptop, originally a laptop would probably accept voltage within 17.5 to 21.4V,  a lower voltage requires higher amperage though, which can make your laptop produces more heat.

So want to make sure that your laptop  AC adapter is well within tolerance expectations, make sure not higher than the original regulated, so that your device won’t malfunction hot,  or burnout while in use.

Do I connect the AC Adapter directly to my laptop if the battery isn’t working?

Yes, absolutely if the battery is completely dead, there’s no use in keeping it installed inside your laptop,  you can remove the battery from your laptop and connect the ac adapter directly to your laptop and keep using the laptop since the battery is not necessary to run a laptop that is plugged in with its AC adapter and there is no evidence that an ac adapter will physically damage the laptop if used directly with a laptop.

Conclusion: What’s the difference between a Regular device Adapter and a laptop AC Adapter

They  Both work the same thing but the difference between the two of them is the output.
